Balanced Raw Diet = Variety

Balanced Raw Diet = Variety

Balanced Raw Diet = Variety

Surely you've heard that well-worn adage before, "Variety is the spice of life." And if you've ever chatted with me, you've also heard, "Variety is the key to a balanced diet." You don't have to be a nutritionist, a vet or a scientist to understand that, it's just common sense.

Build your pet's diet on the core protein meats and fish, add fresh produce, some organ meat and bone in one form or another and you're set to go. Ideally you'll feed your pet a 3-4 different protein meats (fish) per week consisting of red meat, poultry and fish.

But of course there are differences within these main protein groups. Take red meats - lamb is fattier (tastier too), bison and elk are lean and gamey and beef is somewhere in between. Just mix them up -  add variety.

About poultry: Chicken is a wonderful and gentle base for any diet (unless of course your pet is allergic to it), in which case you can try the leaner turkey or the wonderfully chewy and fatty duck. Like my cousin Ernie with the obscenely flared nostrils says about all-you-can-eat buffets, "It's all good."

Check out salmon or smelts (or both) for the fishy Omega-3 part of the diet and if your critter no like fish, try our Balanced Mix where it's mixed in with the meat and veggies - just don't tell him. Or, if that doesn't work, squirt a few shots of fish or seal oil on the food.

That said, pet owners know that it's not always so easy to mix things up. There are allergies, not to mention meats and fish that some pets just don't like. So what you gonna do? The best you can, what else? At least test as wide a range of meats and fish as possible, even if it means trying out something exotic like kangaroo or seal or wild boar (which we stock on occasion).

You may not be lucky enough to have a pet as undiscerning as my cousin Ernie whose cast-iron stomach can even handle inorganic matter, but at least you can keep trying.
